AFTER A WORK COPYING RAPHAEL (1483-1520)

Study of a man's arm

c.1853-76

Albumen print | 10.0 x 15.0 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852700

A photograph of a drawing formerly thought to be by Raphael now in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (inv. no.WA1846.276). The drawing is now generally regarded as a copy of a lost original study by Raphael for the arm of the foremost figure running alongside the rider in the centre-right foreground of the fresco of The Expulsion of Heliodorus from the Temple, painted in 1511-12 in the Stanza di Eliodoro in the Vatican. A photograph of the fresco can be found at RCIN 852670.
