Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

WILLIAM BAMBRIDGE (1820-79)

Princess Helena, later Princess Christian of Schleswig-Holstein (1846-1923) in her Confirmation dress

1861

RCIN 2083678

Glass plate negative of a full length portrait of Princess Helena posing as if in her Confirmation. She is seen from behind, kneeling at a 'staged' altar and gazing ahead, away from the camera.

The photograph was later manipulated to show the Princess in front of the altar at Whippingham Church in the Isle of Wight, where she received her confirmation in 17 Apr 1861. See RCIN 2905612.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed.
