Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

FRANCES SALLY DAY (C. 1816-92)

Princess Helena (1846-1923)

Jul 1859

RCIN 2082689

Glass plate negative featuring two full length portraits of Princess Helena seated at a table, facing towards the camera. She gazes down at a book she holds open with both hands, placing its spine on the table. She wears a locket, light coloured shirt, tied at the waist with dark coloured fabric, and a dark coloured skirt. The photograph was taken at Osborne.

The negative image on the left has been scratched out, an act perhaps indicative of a displeasing pose.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. A print from the intact portrait exists in the Collection, RCIN 2900210.
