Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

LEONIDA CALDESI (1823-91)

Princess Beatrice (1857-1944) and Mary Ann Thurston (1810-96)

May 1858

Wet collodion negative | RCIN 2083707

Glass plate negative of the nanny Mary Ann Thurston (1810-96) with Princess Beatrice (1857-1944). Thurston wears a striped dress, lace collar and lace cap. Princess Beatrice wears a short-sleeved gown. They have been photographed through a window or doorway.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. A series of prints from this sitting exist in the Collection, see for example RCIN 2900134.
