Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

JOHN JABEZ EDWIN MAYALL (1813-1901)

Princess Alice, later Grand Duchess of Hesse and by Rhine (1843-78)

Feb 1861

RCIN 2082510

Glass plate negative of a full length portrait of Princess Alice standing, facing to the right. She looks down at a book held in her hands, and rests her right elbow on a plinth beside her. A dark lace shawl is draped over her elbows.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Prints from this negative exist in the Collection (e.g. RCINs 2900449 and 2900431).
