Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods
RCIN 2084337
Glass plate negative of a daguerreotype by Thomas Richard Williams taken on 21 November 1856. The image depicts an almost full-length portrait of Victoria, Princess Royal later German Empress and Queen of Prussia (1840-1901) seated, facing halfway to the left. She turns her head to look at the camera. The princess wears a light colour hair piece, pearl necklace, light colour dress decorated with lace and tulle, and light colour gloves.
The negative has been masked out, indicating the photographer's intention to crop the work to the smaller frame.
The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Whilst the original daguerreotype is no longer part of the Collection, a print from this negative survives, RCIN 2800769.
