Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

THOMAS RICHARD WILLIAMS (1825-71)

RCIN 2084330

Glass plate negative of a full-length portrait of Princess Alice, later Grand Duchess of Hesse and by Rhine (1843-78). She is standing on a raised platform, facing the viewer. She appears to be holding a book in both hands. She wears a light-coloured dress trimmed with lace, light coloured gloves, a strand of pearls and earrings. This is the outfit she wore at her confirmation at Windsor Castle.

The negative has been masked out, indicating the photographer's intention to crop the work to the smaller frame.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Prints from this negative exist in the Collection (e.g. RCINs 2900177 and 2143861).
