Queen Victoria noted that the words of this song, scored for Voce and Forte piano (voice and piano) were by ‘Viscount Fordwich (aged 7 years)’. This was Francis Cowper, elder son of 6th Earl Cowper. He was born in 1834, and became 7th Earl in 1856. His parents were close friends of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, who left Panshanger, the Cowper’s country house in Hertfordshire, on 31 July 1841, after a brief visit. That evening they: ‘Rested, read despatches, & then we played on the piano’. (RA QVJ 31 July 1841)
