Vatican Frescoes

Two young tritons

dated 1579

Engraving | RCIN 853741

A print by Cherubino Alberto depicting two young tritons which is believed to reproduce a now lost part of the decoration on an exterior pilaster of the Loggia, designed by Raphael and executed by his workshop (c.1517-19) in the Vatican. Lettered along bottom with attribution of the composition to Raphael; printmaker's monogram (Nagler, vol.1, no.208) and date (trimmed) at bottom right. Trimmed within platemark. Annotated on verso.

The repeating sequence of decoration in the Logge - see Dacos 2008 (Bibliographic References) for more information - is strongly influenced by the antique; Raphael had studied antique sculpture and painting in Rome.

  • Added to the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (c.1853-76)
