AFTER A WORK COPYING RAPHAEL (URBINO 1483-ROME 1520)

The Parnassus

c.1830-40

Lithograph | 29.4 x 44.9 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852476

A lithographic facsimile of a drawing currently in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (inv. no.WA1846.272). This was made for, but not published in, ‘Lawrence Gallery. A series of facsimiles of original drawings by Raffaelle da Urbino’, London 1841.

The drawing is a copy of a lost original design by Raphael, apparently an early study for the composition of the Parnassus fresco, painted in c.1510-11 in the Stanza della Segnatura, Vatican.
