Study of a woman carrying two water-jars

c.1853-76

Albumen print | RCIN 852835

A photograph of a drawing now in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (inv. no.WA1846.284). Formerly attributed to Raphael, the sheet is now thought to be a copy after the figure of the woman carrying two water-jars painted in the lower right foreground of the fresco of 'The Fire in the Borgo', executed in the Stanza dell'Incendio in the Vatican in c.1514. A similar drawing (although in reverse) was catalogued by Ruland as being then in the Academy at Düsseldorf; for a photograph see RCIN 852834.
  • Acquired for the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (c.1853-76)
