Study for the figure of Diogenes in 'The School of Athens'
dated June 1821Etching on tone plate | 32.1 x 36.5 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852558
A facsimile of a drawing by Raphael (c.1509) now in the Städelsches Kunstinstitut, Frankfurt (inv. no.380). Lettered with title and production details. Published in W.Y. Ottley's Italian School of Design, London 1823.
The studies on the sheet refer to the figure of the philosopher lying on the steps in the centre of Raphael's School of Athens, painted in c.1509-10 in the Stanza della Segnatura in the Vatican. Following Vasari's account of the fresco, this figure is usually identified as the Greek philosopher Diogenes the Cynic (Diogenes of Sinope). A photograph of the drawing can be found at RCIN 852557.
