Study for a caryatid

c.1853-76

Albumen print | RCIN 853002

A photograph of a drawing generally attributed to Raphael (c.1520) now in the Städel Museum, Graphische Sammlung, Frankfurt am Main (inv. no.421). The drawing is a study for the caryatid painted by Raphael's workshop above the allegorical figure of Charity on the right of Urban I in the Sala di Costantino in the Vatican. The attribution of the drawing is a matter of ongoing debate, with some scholars attributing it to Raphael and others to one of his assistants (Penni/Giulio Romano). For further discussion, see Bibliographic References.
  • Acquired for the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (c.1853-76)
