      AFTER A WORK COPYING THE WORKSHOP OF RAPHAEL (1483-1520)

      Jacob wrestles with the angel

      A photograph of a drawing in the Royal Library at Windsor Castle (RCIN 990492), considered a copy after the almost entirely destroyed fresco Jacob wrestles with the angel painted by the workshop of Raphael (c.1517-19) in the basamento of the sixth bay of the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican. There are some variations between this drawing and other copies after the fresco, such as the etching by Pietro Santi Bartoli (see RCIN 853664) and another drawing in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (inv.no.WA1846.291).

      The drawing was catalogued by Ruland (1876) as being attributed to Perino del Vago, whom Vasari credited with executing the basamento frescoes. According to Dacos (see Bibliographic References), the basamento paintings of the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican were executed in grisaille and imitated bronze reliefs.
