Head of Dante [from 'The Disputa']

c.1809-1837

Engraving | RCIN 852470

A print reproducing the head and shoulders of Dante, standing in the lower right corner of the fresco of the Disputa (The Disputation of the Holy Sacrament), painted by Raphael in the Stanza della Segnatura, Vatican. Proof before all letters. Annotated in pencil with the engraver's name. Stamped with the blind stamp of the 'Chalcographie du Louvre, Musées Imperiaux'.

Ruland (1876) erroneously described the figure of Dante as taken from the fresco of Parnassus, where the poet is depicted standing to the left of Homer.
  • Added to the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (c.1853-76)
