Head of a bearded man [from 'The Expulsion of Heliodorus from the Temple']

dated 1840

Engraving | RCIN 852678

An engraving of the head and shoulders of a long-haired bearded man looking at the viewer. Dated and lettered with identification of the sitter and production details. The figure reproduced in this print is one of the Pope's litter-bearers from Raphael's fresco of 'The Expulsion of Heliodorus from the Temple', painted in 1511-12 in the Stanza di Eliodoro in the Vatican. The figure was described by Vasari as the portrait of Marcantonio Raimondi and this identification has been generally accepted ever since.
