A kneeling woman seen from behind

published 1774

Colour aquatint with etching | RCIN 852695

A facsimile of a drawing catalogued by Ruland (1876) as being then in the Uffizi, Florence. Lettered with artists' names. Published in S. Mulinari, 'Disegni originali d'eccellenti pittori esistenti nella reale galleria di Firenze', Florence 1774, plate XI. For a photograph of the drawing see RCIN 852696.

The Uffizi drawing is regarded as a copy from a study by Raphael (c.1511-12) drawn on the recto of a sheet now in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (inv. no.WA1846.198r), preparatory for the figure of the kneeling woman painted in the left foreground of Raphael's fresco of 'The Expulsion of Heliodorus from the Temple'. A photograph of the Oxford drawing can be found at RCIN 852691.
  • Added to the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (c.1853-76)
