UGO DA CARPI (C. 1480-1532)
The Death of Ananias
dated 1518Chiaroscuro woodcut, from three blocks in grey | 26.8 x 38.0 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 853124
A chiaroscuro woodcut after Raphael's design for the Sistine Chapel tapestry of The Death of Ananias now hanging in the Vatican Museums (inv. no.43870). First state. Lettered with text in Latin below image including names of artists, date of production and privilege obtained from Pope Leo X and the Venetian Senate. For a second state impression see RCIN 853125.
No preparatory studies for the final tapestry composition survive. The original tapestry cartoon by Raphael is now in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London on loan from the Royal Collection (see RCIN 912947). It has been suggested that Ugo da Carpi's chiaroscuro woodcut may be based on an engraving of the same subject by Agostino Veneziano dating c.1516 (see RICNs 853122, 853123). For further discussion, see Bibliographic References.
