The Procession of Silenus

An etching which, according to the lettering below image, reproduces a drawing then attributed to Raphael and housed in the Crozat Collection, Paris. Published in B. Picart, 'Impostures Innocentes', Amsterdam 1734, plate 2. The drawing is currently untraced. A copy of Picart's volume can be found at RCIN 809004. The composition is better known through an engraving by Agostino Veneziano (RCIN 851816: reputed to be after a design by Raphael or Giulio Romano). Another drawing of this subject, currently in the British Museum, London, and possibly once in the Crozat Collection (inv. no.1946,0713.502), is thought to be a copy after the original model for Agostino's engraving, rather than after the print itself (Shoemaker/Broun 1981, p.202). Pouncey/Gere (1962) advised that the British Museum drawing cannot be identified with the drawing reproduced by Picart in this facsimile. For further discussion, see Bibliographic References.
