MARCANTONIO RAIMONDI (C. 1480-1534)

Pan and the Infant Bacchus

c.1515-20

Engraving | 12.9 x 9.7 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 851827

An engraving after a design the authorship of which is a matter of dispute. Some scholars support the traditional attribution to Raphael (Bartsch, Passavant), whereas others ascribe it to his school (Delaborde). It has been suggested that Raimondi himself may have had part in designing the composition (Shoemaker/Broun 1981). Signed with the engraver's monogram at lower left: MAF. With an ink annotation at lower left ascribing the design to Raphael: R. VRB. INV.

The engraving, formerly interpreted as Satyr and Child, is now generally identified as Pan and the Infant Bacchus (first suggested by Davidson, and accepted by all scholars since).
