Hercules Strangling the Nemean Lion

c.1853-76

Albumen print | RCIN 851845

A photograph of a drawing now in the Royal Library at Windsor Castle (RCIN 990298). The drawing closely resembles an engraving by Adam Ghisi (RCIN 851844: after a design attributed to Giulio Romano), of which is thought to be a copy.

It has been suggested the the drawing might be by Ghisi himself, and preparatory for the engraving (Popham in 'The Italian Drawings of the XV and XVI Centuries [...] at Windsor Castle', no.373).
  • Acquired for the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (c.1853-76)
