Holy Families & Madonna and Child

Holy Families & Madonna and Child

Two studies of the Virgin and Child

c.1763-1765

Etching | RCIN 850900

A reversed facsimile of a drawing by Raphael (c.1505) now in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. no.3856 v). Photographs of this drawing can be found at: RCIN 850898 and 851250.

At right is a study for a Virgin and Child composition. At left is a sketch copied from Michelangelo’s ‘Taddei Tondo’, a circular relief sculpture now housed in the Royal Academy of Arts, London. Ruland (1876) did not describe this drawing as a copy after Michelangelo and associated it with Raphael’s ‘Bridgewater Madonna’ (c.1507) currently on loan to the National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh (inv. no.NGL 065.46) from the Duke of Sutherland Collection.
  • Added to the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (c.1853-76)
