AUGUSTE GASPARD LOUIS BOUCHER DESNOYERS (1779-1857)
The Virgin and Child
c.1799-1847Engraving with etching | 66.9 x 48.7 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 851176
A print after a painting formerly reputed to be by Raphael. According to the lettering below the image, the painting was presented by Raphael to Taddeo Taddi in 1507. Lettered with production details and title.
Ruland (1876) attributed the painting to Bernard van Orley. The inscription lettered on a print by Noel François Bertand reproducing the Virgin alone indicates that the painting was then in the collection of Mr Legras, Saint-Germain-en-Laye, France. See RCIN 851177.
The print shows the full-length Virgin seating on the ground and holding some flowers in her left hand and holding the naked Christ Child with her right; in a landscape with sluice gates beyond them.
