Studies for a Christ Child
published 1857Albumen print | 29.0 x 21.6 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850897
A photograph of a study sheet by Raphael (c.1509-11) now in the British Museum, London (inv. no. Pp,1.72). As lettered on the sheet, the photographed drawing once belonged to the collection of Richard Payne Knight.
Ruland (1876) associated this sheet with Raphael’s ‘Bridgewater Madonna’ (c.1507), a painting then in the collection of the Earl of Ellesmere, London, and now on loan to the National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh (inv. no.NGL 065.46), from the Duke of Sutherland Collection. Although showing similarities with the ‘Bridgewater Madonna’, it is now generally thought that the British Museum sheet cannot be directly related to the painting. According to Joannides (see Bibliographic References) this sheet is a study for the 'Madonna di Loreto' (see RCIN 850869 for a print after this painting).
