Albumen print | 9.1 x 6.3 cm (image) | RCIN 2906446

Photograph of a full length double portrait of the Honourable Alice (1843-67) and Edith (1845-71) Jocelyn. The two young women stand together, facing slightly inwards, towards each other. Alice, on the left, looks down at a letter she holds in front of her chest with both hands. Edith places her right hand on Alice's left shoulder.

Alice and Edith were the daughters of Robert Jocelyn, Viscount Jocelyn, who married Frances Cowper in 1841. Frances Cowper becames Queen Victoria's Lady-of-the-Bedchamber in the same year. After the early death of their father Lady Frances Jocelyn turned to photography, possibly encouraged by Dr Ernst Becker, Prince Albert's Librarian.
